How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the negotiated vehicle price, then your down payment and trade-in value.
  2. Add your local sales tax rate and the APR your lender quoted.
  3. Choose the loan term in years and press Calculate to see your monthly payment and total cost.

How it works

The real cost of a car loan depends on far more than the sticker price. This calculator accounts for your down payment, the value of any vehicle you trade in, and the sales tax charged in your state โ€” then applies the lender's APR over the term you choose.

In most US states, a trade-in reduces the taxable amount: you only pay sales tax on the price after the trade-in is subtracted. This calculator applies tax to the price minus your trade-in, which can save you hundreds of dollars compared with estimates that tax the full price.

A larger down payment lowers both your monthly payment and the total interest you pay, and helps you avoid owing more than the car is worth. Shorter terms cost more per month but far less overall.

Example: A $35,000 car with a $5,000 down payment, 7% sales tax and a 7.5% APR over 5 years works out to roughly $650/month, with the financed amount including tax on the post-trade-in price.

Frequently asked questions

Does a trade-in reduce sales tax?
In most US states, yes โ€” you only pay sales tax on the price after the trade-in is deducted. This calculator applies tax to the price minus trade-in.
What is a good APR for a car loan?
It depends on your credit score and the market, but borrowers with strong credit often qualify for the lowest advertised rates. Always compare offers from your bank, a credit union, and the dealer.
Should I make a bigger down payment?
A larger down payment lowers your monthly payment, reduces total interest, and helps you avoid being "underwater" on the loan.
