How it works
Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) is a tax paid when buying property or land over a certain price in England and Northern Ireland. The tax is calculated on a "slice" basis, meaning you only pay the specific rate for the portion of the property price that falls within each tax band.
For example, if you are not a first-time buyer purchasing a house for £300,000, you pay 0% on the first £250,000, and 5% on the remaining £50,000, resulting in a total tax bill of £2,500.
